Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff Review

What I loved best about this book is that Don Cherry's "voice" shines through on every page. Reading the book felt just like listening to Don on Coach's Corner - outspoken, opinionated, and passionate. Cherry writes what it was like playing in the minors, shares stories of players past and current, as well as personal anecdotes of Hockey Night in Canada and the most famous hockey dog, his Blue. He isn't afraid to call out individuals by name for their behavior and admits some of his own mistakes as well. Love him or hate him, there's two things that can't be argued after reading this book - 1) Don is a proud Canadian who understands and appreciates his heritage and 2) Don Cherry loves the game of hockey. His love of the game comes through on every page.

Name All the Animals: A Memoir Review

Name All the Animals: A Memoir

This is a true story, which is why it's described as a memoir. But it could just as easily have been published as a novel. It has all the character development, suspense, narrative arc, and beautiful writing of the best literary fiction. So don't dismiss it if you're not a big memoir fan. It should appeal to fiction and nonfiction readers equally.
But regardless of how it's categorized, I could NOT put this book down. I read it every second I could and couldn't bear to be away from it when I was at work. The grief made my heart break, but the love story, and Alison's success in figuring out who she is, just made my heart swell. It's such a gorgeous, moving portrait of a family, both in grief and in love. It's told through the 15-year-old eyes of the author, and she just GETS adolescence. I was sent spiralling back to my own memories of high school, and the unique, electric, unforgettable experience of first love. It's one of those unforgettable books that only come along every so often. I highly recommend it to readers everywhere.

Get Dressed Breaking Out of the Crossdressing Closet Review

Get Dressed Breaking Out of the Crossdressing Closet

Like from the old Wendy's commercials. I looked inside and didn't find much meat, substance. I found the book entertaining, read it cover to cover in 2 settings. She talked a lot about the Transgender magazine she use to publish; I'm sure ground breaking in its day, but the personal experiences like disappointments and failures where not in depth. Not a real deep, thought provoking emotionally enlightening book. A few good tid bits of advise based on her experiences, but note an inspiring story nor a much advice on dressing. Mostly fluff, granted I got the feeling she has a great attitude toward life, but I like books that deliver on many levels. This was not it.
