Coupled with this book on John Wilmot:A Profane Wit : The Life of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, "Some Passages..." offers a unique insight into one of the best poets of the Restoration era. While the authenticity/accuracy of the work has occasionaly been called into question by some Rochester biographers, there can be no doubt that the poet went through a long period of emotional and religious agony towards the end of his brilliantly short life. What you get in this book is a deep insight into the kinds of questions he was asking himself, and his new-found bishop friend Burnet's attempt to help him find some answers.
It is an exact reproduction from the 1680's publication, however, and some readers may find the older style writing and spelling to be a little awkward at first. However once you begin to read, it really ceases to be a problem, and any fan of Rochester's work will appreciate the opportunity to get their hands on a copy of this extremely rare book for a fraction of the price of an original copy. For those of us who love literature at an affordable price, Kessinger Publishing is a real asset to any favourites list.
