(More customer reviews)PAETEC is a sizeable Telecom company with other core businesses that continue to operate in Rochester, NY. I have always enjoyed reading about Arunas Chesonis, the CEO as he finished his MBA at the University of Rochester's Simon School and opened what is now a large company in Rochester, NY. This does not happen that much anymore in Rochester, NY or even Western/Central NY (hell, even in NY outside of NYC).
I love the first chapter is "Putting People First". This easily could have been the last chapter or tucked away in the middle, but he starts right off about how he loves his employees and creating a great culture and atmosphere to do great work.
In another chapter, "Share the Knowledge" I love the line about deciding in their sales ranks what to charge the customer. "Go to the profit model and figure out what works for us and the customer. If your customer wants two cents a minute, tell him how much business he has to give us to get to that rate." I found this to be great advice about how to sell your services, meet your customer's needs, and to grow your business all at the same time.
Several other chapters contain good advice on responding with care, making it personal and other strong advice about customer care. It's about nurturing your business and allowing the employees to make decisions on how to solve problems.
In sum, a great book about how to grow your business the right way in the post Enron business environment while learing lessons from the Dot.Com businesses of the late nineties.
Also, the book is printed through RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) which is really cool. PAETEC is looking to put their World Headquarters in downtown Rochester where I can look out my window and see where it will be built.
