Raising Myself by Carla Brooks Johnston gives a strong and coherent voice to those children.
I recommend this book to teachers, future teachers, social workers, guidance counselors and parents. In the hands of a less talented author the almost unbelievable true life experiences Ms. Johnston recounts could border on depressing. Instead, the vibrant spirit and keen intellect of the author shine through triumphantly as this young girl takes control of her destiny and truly raises herself.

Raising Myself by Carla Brooks Johnston is a true story set against a background of adventures of a female Tom Sawyer that will keep you turning pages as you empathize with the efforts of a teenager trying to find a life for herself even as she lies in a hospital bed hoping to recover from being stabbed by a would-be rapist..
