(More customer reviews)He never became a marine biologist. Today, Mr. Stonecipher is happily married, and is a member of the singing group, Chapter 6.
AD wrote this book when he was 12. I bought it from Chapter 6's online store for $20. I'd met AD before, at a Chapter 6 performance. After buying the book, I went to another performance where he signed my book for me! (See my customer image.)
The book tells the tale of a young boy who visits his grandfather. His grandfather then tells him of an experience or dream that he had had as a child.
While the book could be seen as a "save the ocean" tract, the amount of concern that a 12-year old boy showed for the enviroment is this book's true strength. I was thoroughly impressed, especially by the ending. The reader is left with questions about the story. Was the grandfather's experience real or dreamed? And then at the end, is the boy dreaming, or is he actually living this? And if one was dreaming, did the other?
A word should also be said for the illustrations. Very lifelike, and dreamy, though in one picture, the boy looks emaciated. Certainly some of the best I've seen.
This book is an amazing example of a great children's book. I really wish a larger publisher would pick this up.
