(More customer reviews)It has admittedly been awhile since I had read a well documented discourse on the topic of when does life begin. Most people fall into one of two camps, either: a) at conception; or b) sometime later (opinions of which tend to vary widely). First group is generally regarded as pro-life, second group is generally regarded as pro-abortion. The Doctors Merritt (father and son, both Mayo clinic doctors at one point in their respective careers) provide a careful analysis from an historical perspective on how we got to our current state. They offer a different and very thought provoking (and sure to be controversial) view on when human life begins. As an aside, it is interesting that their conclusion does answer most of the negative charges from both political sides of the camp, as well as addressing the topic of stem cell research. There is also a review of philosophical and religious arguments for the various points at which life begins. Without giving away their final conclusions based on science and religion (you'll have to buy the book to get that), you will definitely find it to be one that will get you thinking. And keep you thinking, long after you put down the book.

There is a tension that exists between those who believe in scientific progress through any means, and those who believe in a foundational morality as the basis for all of our actions and scientific advances. Nowhere is this debate more fiercely seen than that in the stem cell and abortion debates seen today. What is the basis for this conflict - and for the position each side takes? The nexus of this conflict is one of the most fundamental questions mankind has faced - one that reaches the very level of our own unique human identity - When Does Human Life Begin? In order to understand the question of when life begins we must first attempt to understand what forms the foundations of our current history. This book is the beginning of an effort to align history with the perspective of scripture and biology to investigate life's origins. This book provides a unique perspective into the debate totally entrenched in dogma and emotion. While it is a hot-button topic - few may stop to consider the reasons for their belief, or of their opponents. It is hoped that by further understanding the foundation for our current thinking - that we can come to an understanding that brings greater clarity to the debate - and the solution.
